My personal statement
I was born in a well-educated family at Nagpur in India. My Father a (ret’d) Mining engineer, mother an arts graduate .My father like a hard fisted miner of California not in gold rush but struggled hard by staying on mines & keeping his family in the city for education of his kids & incorporating moral values into them for a noble life.
I did, Schooling from Bishop Cotton School, Nagpur. It being a Christian school I had a warm experience of bible reading in daily morning assembly Choir which sowed seeds in me for helping the poor & needy at early age.
Finally after 12th grade I passed All India Medical entrance exam & succeeded in securing admission to Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Sewagram India. Mahatma Gandhi was a noble soul & his principles of Non violence, self help, Shramdan (donation of labor for good cause) were embodied deep into the culture of M.G.I.M.S.under the directorship of Dr Sushila Nayyar a (postgraduate of John Hopkins USA) a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, had started M.G.I.M.S for the care of destitute in rural India
I entered Medical School in 1985 at M.G.I.M.S, Where in I met my love from my batch to whom I got married in 1990. In our courtship days made plans about spending life to-gether and enjoyed looking at different things with a common objective. Our medical school organized free medical camps in villages to provide primary health care that required us to stay in villages. I have fond memories of those days when I learnt about real life difficulties and ways of surmounting them, as well as my love life blossomed.
I completed my internship in 1990.Arround that time I had a opportunity to visit an Operation theater of a big Hospital in a rich Industrial town of North India where my elder brother was working as Orthopaedician, I was bewildered to see a spine surgery performed where Nurses were administering Halothane with open mask, Surgery was uneventful but when the patient was shifted to post-opr room the patient passed away it gave me a gooseflesh! A well-executed operation could not see the light of success because of shortage of Anesthetists.
In 1992 I got registration in Diploma Anesthesiology & my wife got registration in Diploma Obs-Gyn, God once again showered his blessings on us by making us work to-gether. During our residency the work was heavy and demanding, which left us with very little time for ourselves. Heavy work had its own advantages. We were exposed to lot of difficult & challenging cases, which increased our knowledge & confidence as well. After we joined the Department new residents were made to work in rural areas for two years, shortage of residents proved a blessing for us. My son Akhil was born on 9th sept 1993 & my happiness knew no bounds.
After passing out Diploma Anesthesiology in 1994 I planned to start my practise in a rural area because it satisfied my objective of primary care for women and it involved my wife’s work also. I gained experience for a couple of months with local practitioners of the area and then, I started my own 4 bedded hospital at a rented place & I named it “Janta Hospital & Maternity Home” a center for safe motherhood & women care, (Janta means Public or masses in Hindi language).
The place was in suburbs of the city where electricity supply always played a truant .At times we had to manage a LSCS without electricity and used A foot operated suction, Later on when our Hospital flourished we could manage an electrical generator of our own.
Finally in 1998 with all finances we had I tried my level best to make a comfortable 15-bedded hospital. I registered my hospital as a charitable hospital with one free OPD day for needy patients and also providing free Ultrasounds as well. To make it easy to handle emergencies, I underwent training programme in ultrasonology. I was thus managing my Hospital as well as looking after General OPD, Ultrasounds & if any operative procedure was being done I was managing Anesthesia. This all demanded a tremendous flexibility.
I firmly agree to the notion that body is made of 5 elements of nature, & as we stay close to nature we stay healthier. When I passed my post graduation in anesthesiology I had a feeling of emptiness somewhere & so I thought to supplement my knowledge with virtues of Alternate medicine. So I took a course in Alternate medicines. This course had many parts but I was influenced the most by Magnetic healing, i.e. by the use of magnets I could heal many aches & pains also I treated a patient of chronic Insomnia, they could sleep well without any drugs. I kept on using magnets & acupressure for many patients who couldn't find a refuge in Allopathic medicines for their ailments.
Then after a while I started to divulge into Herbal medicines .1 started to read their books & went through Charka & other pharmacopoeia of botanical medicines in Ayurveda. I prescribed them to many patients, most of them were of Irritable colon syndromes, and also did I take an introductory course to Ayurveda from Jiva Ayurveda Faridabad India. The medicines did work but results were not very encouraging for both, the patient as well as doctor. Mean while I was also searching books on Homeopathy a science that is totally symptom based. I clearly remember asking a homeopath "Sir what is the name of this medicine?" & he answered," when I am not bothered about the name of your disease why are you bothered about the name of medicine".
Slowly developing interest in these fields took me to Haridwar & Rishikesh in year 2000 where I saw growing interest in Yoga & more so in Pranayama. I happened to stay in a Ashrams & learnt this yogic exercises & Pranayam, there I came across many patients of motor neuron disorders, Coronary triple vessel blockage, who have been refused surgery, also skin diseases like Psoriasis, joint problems of rheumatoid arthritis & others getting completely cured, I mean these patients have been taking treatment from Allopathic Faculty but were not getting respite.
However in contradiction to above, I would like to intensify the truth that "all that glitters is not gold" & not every dog that wags the tail gets the bread. Not all patients were getting cured some of them really lost all of their money, & I could see for myself the results were erratic because of no systematic approach.
I would compliment this reality, with the fact that these patients were at the dispense of saints who are not sufficiently trained in dealing with medicines & patients, more so standardization In Ayurveda & yoga is not up to the mark so it worked for some & not for others. But definitely after I returned from my brief tour of Rishikesh I was a different person & was strongly advocating to every patient the art of using Pranayama for a better health.
Pranayama is an art which has a spiritual background of healing through Chakras & scientific background of taking the person in Alkalotic state & thus chelating Calcium which gives arteries more elasticity or compliance & so decreases hypertension as well as arteriosclerosis where calcium deposition forms the nidus to form an arteriosclerosis plaque (compliance) & decreases blood pressure as well as arteriosclerosis where calcium deposition forms the nidus to form an arteriosclerosis plaque. Also the other reason being that breathing exercises pull up the lymphatic fluid through the thoracic duct improving moving on immune system thus helping many chronic autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis to get cured.
As seen by research that Pranayama itself can cure 140 diseases, & stress elimination by postural meditation can cure 70 diseases this makes me think just by simple manipulation of life for better we can abate nearly all diseases which are called as diseases by western medicine but are essentially nothing but a energy imbalance.
My second experience was, while preparing for an exam I was under a great stress to the extent, that I started having sleepless nights & thought to give up the project. I came across REIKI HEALING & to my astonishment the treatment worked the very first day& I could feel my mental tired ness going away. This imprinted on my brain that human body is not mechanical, as Allopathic science would take it. Hence I took a course
2ND, 3RD-Degree, & Masters from New Delhi with Magnified healing from Florida USA. And so my Journey into meditation started & daily devoted some time to it.
My third experience was when my coach of REIKI gave a talk On Past life regression therapy not for fun! But for the treatment of non curable asthma .The reason being that body has past life memories, as a result of which person suffers in this birth, it was hard to verify validity of this fact but if it works I think we should believe. After this I registered my self for level- 1 of Hypnotherapy course from Hypnosis motivation Institute at Los Angeles under the guidance of Prof George Kappas. Now I am a certified Past life regression Therapist.
We had a 15 bedded facility in India I work in my hospital with my wife as a team to give general & primary Obstetrics & Gynecology care , & other surgical operations including family care for the poor underprivileged. This all demanded a tremendous flexibility, which is the main energy of my working. These all services are all available at meager expenses.
My wife being a Ob-Gyn specialist we mainly deal with women population with Ob-Gyn & other general ailments of family practice Life continues to be same for last 7-8 years With a lot of routine work of Normal deliveries, LSCS, Abortions, a few General surgery cases like appendicitis, cholecystectomy, at times emergency included A.P.H., P.P.H, Pre Eclampsia, Retained placenta, vaginal tears & occasionally a fancy operations like VVF repair, Uterus Bladder Intestine rupture repair in a home delivery tried out by unlicensed practitioner in remote interior villages. Being in the private set-up this requires a close interaction with the patient for matters dealing with finance, where we have to tailor the treatments within the scope of availability of money that has not only helped to improve my confidence but has taught deeper understanding of the society values. This is where I feel the need of alternative sciences that goes to a large extent in saving money & making a healthier nation.
Finally after a experience in Anesthesia for Primary care in Obstetrics & Gynecology & Alternative medicine practise which involves Holistic Approach I’ve set my eyes towards Western world, to grow more at the professional level which involve research activity & to learn latest developments for committed patient care.
One life is too short to learn everything available on this planet but at least an effort put forward to learn as much as possible will definitely contribute in making this world a better place to live in.
